abstract:Pope Celestine V (; 1215 – 19 May 1296), born Pietro Angelerio (according to some sources Angelario, Angelieri, Angelliero, or Angeleri), also known as Pietro da Morrone and Peter of Morrone, was the head of the Catholic Church for a few months from 5 July to 13 December 1294 when resigned. He was also a monk and hermit who founded the order of the Celestines.
With hindsight, his visit to the tomb of 13th century PopeCelestineV, a Benedictine monk who resigned from the papacy eight centuries before, becomes poignant.
In the 13th century, PopeCelestineV resigned under pressure and was imprisoned by his successor, who feared the previous pope could become a rival, said Father Cito.
